Rory is a genuine American manufactured bear from the 1930s. When he first came to me, he was showing evidence of time’s ravages, as well as having met a few moths in his long lifetime. Where he once had a full coat of white mohair, now he was virtually furless. It was clear that his soulful potential was longing to be renewed and refreshed. I was eager to make functional repairs and especially to bless him with a beauty treatment that would showcase his strong inner character. First, I set out to make sure he was structurally sound; stuffing augmented as needed, paws recovered in new wool felt, fresh vintage print patches covering hand wounds, shoe-button eyes back in their sockets and backed with wool felt for perfect vision, multiple darning spots finishing up the repairs, making way for new embroidered claws and facial features. Since he was still looking a bit pale, I chose to give him a light haze of color to bring his new look to life. All he needed was a few stitches to completely renew his charming coat, handmade with love long ago. For the final touches, I crocheted for him a long, soft neck scarf and added a pocket full of vintage posies. I like to think of Rory’s new look as “loved to life”.
